겸손

"우리는 오랜 세월 동안 평화와 번영을 유지해 왔습니다. 우리는 다른 어떤 나라와도 비교할 수 없을 만큼 인구와 부와 권력을 성장시켰습니다. 그러나 우리는 하나님을 잊었습니다. 우리를 평화롭게 보존하시고 번성하게 하시고 풍성하게 하시고 강하게 하신 은혜의 손길을 잊어버렸으며, 이 모든 축복이 우리 자신의 뛰어난 지혜와 미덕으로 이루어진 것이라고 헛된 마음으로 생각했습니다. 끊임없는 성공에 취해 우리는 은혜를 구속하고 보존해야 할 필요성을 느끼기에는 너무 자만해졌고, 우리를 만드신 하느님께 기도하기에는 너무 교만해졌습니다!"
